Tallinn, March 2009

27 Aug 2008 was the day I landed in Arlanda airport, Stockholm and here begins my new life. A free, independent life with lots of responsibilities. Travelling almost quarter of the earth and landing on a different continent was actually very exciting and scary, especially for a small town boy like me who has never been outside his home town. It was the time to experience new people, new language, new culture, new society in short a whole new world.

The classes of Masters in Applied Biotechnology started on 1 Sep 2008. Slowly and steadily I made new friends and gradually got busy with studies, assignments, projects, presentations and exams. After almost six months I was really tired of the monotonous life of home to class and back. So wanted to have a change by travelling to somewhere. I started asking my friends for it and finally we decided to go for a cruise trip across Baltic sea to Tallinn (the capital of Estonia). We decided and booked the tickets for the day we were finishing our exams of 2nd sem.

Our Cruise (to have an idea of the size look at the car in front of it)

It was 19 March 2009, and we all were very excited. This was my first trip without my parents and first cruise experience. The trip was of 2 nights and 1 day, as we approached to the harbour I was left agape by the size of the ship, it was huge, we boarded it at 5.30 pm and departed at 6.00 pm. As soon as we boarded the cruise and kept our stuffs in our cabins, I was pretty excited to climb up to the deck to watch the ship leaving the harbour. As the time passed, the city went smaller and the sea became enormous, at a point of time we were in the middle of the vast Baltic sea with cold chilly winds freezing us. Later we went down to the shopping area and to the restaurants to have dinner followed by the visit to the bar and disco. It was a special African night on the cruise so we had some African moves on the floor with the professional dancers. We were a group of eight friends which made it even more funnier. We drank and danced till late and later collapsed in our beds.

Next morning at 7 am we were in Tallinn. It is a beautiful and peaceful city which has Russian influence. Estonian and Russian are the two main languages spoken. There are many sites to visit in the old part of the city such as the town hall, city church, panoramic view point from where you can have a look at the beautiful city that was snow covered when we visited, Russian orthodox cathedral is beautiful and something to see. The day was very cold, chilly winds and snow were our company for the whole day. Along with the old part, the new part of the city is also beautiful and clean. We walked a lot so we all were hungry and we decided to have warm lunch and start back for the cruise which was supposed to depart at 5.00 pm.

After another fun-filled night we were back in Stockholm next morning and then to Uppsala, full of energy and motivation for the new sem's hard work.
